        Abstract
Against a contemporary background and inspired by the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, the book develops a materialist media theory. According to this theory, media are materialised forms of social mediation, which in turn must be understood in a historically specific way: in their relationship to the respective historical developments and social conflicts. The book develops the thesis that critical media theory is essentially an analysis of social structures as they are continuously reproduced through objectified communication media.
