oapen.abstract.otherlanguageDuring the Cold War the Netherlands took precautions to protect its people from potential disasters, in particular nuclear threats. The Civil Defence Corps was established in 1952 and was divided into reconnaisance and rescue units, fire brigade units, first aid and ambulance units and welfare units.. This corps also played a key role in promoting the self-protection of the civilian population. The command bunker in the village of Grou in the Friesland province is unique for it housed four frontdoor sharers: a circle (district) command station and provincial command station of the Civil Defence Corps, and also two command centres for the continuity of government in the event of nuclear war or a major national emergency: the municipal government control centre (city of Leeuwarden) and provincial government control centre (Friesland province). The Civil Defence Corps was disbanded in 1986 due to the widely held belief that the risks of a nuclear war were diminished and that the handling of large scale civil emergencies such as floods or earthquakes could be entrusted to the regular fire brigades, ambulance services and the Netherlands Red Cross. The bunker in Grou, preserved as a time capsule of the Cold War era, now serves as an educational centre under the management of Korpora, the Public Safety Heritage Centre. Here visitors are provided with a glimpse into daily life under the threat of a nuclear attack and can learn about the measures taken to protect the civilian population in the Netherlands in the past.
